FoPL has been granted £100k by Pennard Community Charity, subject to planning permission and a few other conditions.
This gives us enough money to build an extension to the existing library building, which itself is being renovated during the summer holidays.
The extension will then house the “Pennard Community Hub”, which will work alongside the Library to provide new services and facilities, including a loo with baby changing facilities, a simple cafe, a meeting space which can be used for study or work or an exhibition and it will be IT-enabled so you can work with your own devices. The new space can equally be used by the library staff and we really hope that the experience of using Pennard Library with be enhanced with the new facilities.
We’ve got lots of work to get on with to make this happen, but are thrilled by the Charity’s decision. We are hoping to start the building work whilst the library renovation work is being carried out (this is being done by Swansea Council and is a separate piece of work to the extension).
The Pennard Community Hub will be run entirely by volunteers, so if you are willing to give up any of your time to support this community project, please get in touch. We will be looking to actively recruit volunteers towards the end of 2014 and hope to have the building up and running by the start of 2015. The more people who volunteer, the less time will be needed from all, and the roles with vary, from a bit of cake making (cakes will then be sold in the cafe) to administrative tasks and running of group activities, so please get in touch if you can.
We’re excited! Thank you for supporting FoPL – your £5 membership fee and any extra monies you may have generously given are going towards the planning application at the moment.
If you haven’t yet become a Friend, you can pick up an application form at the library or download and print the FoPL membership app form here. We will have a stall at Pennard Carnival too where you can become a member.
